Mumbai is as famous for its baarish as it is for being the Bollywood and industrial capital! While some enjoy these showers, other complain due to traffic and train delays.
I personally have mixed feelings about monsoon. I love dancing in the rain but the weather makes my skin and hair so vulnerable. While everyone focuses on skin care and hair care, we often neglect the thing which is most vulnerable during this season, i.e, our feet!
I am sure I’m not the only one who has learnt this in a hard way. In my school days , I was a basketball player. We played even on rainy days and I often ignored my poor wet feet and dirty nails on reaching home. Unless I had to miss a tournament as I couldn’t wear my shoes because of an infection on my left toe thumbnail.
So here are the few things you can do to avoid any infection and keep your feet clean and healthy in Monsoon:
1. Avoid shoes and socks:
Always wear breathable and comfortable footwear to about stinky or swollen feet. You may end up with uncomfortable wet socks and shoes so it’s better to avoid them. Go for some cool flip-flops or trendy flats that are comfortable and wearable in monsoon.

2. Scrub your feet more often:
Like we scrub our faces twice a week, similarly feet should be scrubbed at least twice or trice a week. Also, clean your nails every night before going to bed.
3. Pamper them weekly:
Now anyone can do basic manicure and pedicure at home. Of course you can visit a salon for it if you wish to but I prefer doing it at home as It’s cheaper and more hygienic. My pedicure steps are pretty much simple and basic:
- Soak your feet in a mixture of Luke warm water and bath salts:
You can use bath bombs or foot soaks instead of the bath salts. Or the cheapest alternative is the solution of Listerine and apple cider vinegar. Whatever you choose, soak it for at least 5-10 minutes. This step is essential as it will soften your feet and make the exfoliation process easier.

- Scrub off all the dead cells using a foot scrub :
After soaking, it becomes easier to remove the dead skin cells that accumulate over the new cells. You can use a pumice stone or a foot scrub or both. I use the Inatur foot scrub which works quite well on my heels. if you are using a similar foot scrub, ensure that it’s particles are big enough to exfoliate without being harsh on the skin.

- Moisturize them well:
The last step is to moisturize them well using a foot cream of your choice or you can also use glycerin/Vaseline if your heels are badly cracked. I prefer using the Inatur foot cream as it has an amazing minty fragrance and it keeps my feet soft. Let the cream soak into the skin for few minutes and them wear your cutest pair of soaks!

If you have deep cracked heels, the best way of healing them is by applying glycerin and covering with socks before gong to bed.
4. Always apply sunscreen:
Yes you read that correct! It’s essential to apply sunscreen on your feet too unless you don’t mind having tan lines of your flat or flip-flops. I prefer sunscreens with minimum SPF 40 and PA+++. My favorite sunscreens are the Lotus 3-in-1 SPF 40 and Neutrogena sunblock with SPF 50.
Also, it is essential to reapply sunscreen on your feet too after every three to four hours.
That’s it for today people! follow these simple steps and achieve happy feet.
5. Tan removal mask:
Wearing trendy flats often leave terrible tan lines despite wearing SPF. here are the few homemade remedies for that:
- Apply a paste of turmeric, gram flour and curd to fade those tan lines.
- Lemon has natural bleaching properties and can easily fade away all the tan. Simply rub half a lemon on both feet and wash it off after 15-20 minutes. If you have a sensitive skin, add a little amount of honey to lemon to avoid the tingling effect of lemon juice.
- Tomato juice can also help to remove tan quickly and effectively.
This was my take on foot care,
